PURPOSE
Wirra-Lo Wetlands is a complex of swamps, creeks, and depressions located on a 180-hectare covenanted private property about one kilometre north-east of the junction of Barr Creek and the Loddon River in northern Victoria.. The wetlands include remnant black box and river red gum communities.
Wirra-Lo supports an abundant population of growling grass frog (Vulnerable EPBC Act 1999 and Threatened FFG Act 1988).
Works have also been successfully undertaken to enhance Australasian bittern (Critically Endangered FFG Act 1988) and brolga (Endangered FFG ACt 1988) habitat.
The wetlands further supports several threatened plant species including:
Stiff groundsel (Senecio behrianus; Endanagered EPBC Act 1999 and Critically Endangered FFG Act 1988);
Rigid water-milfoil (Myriophyllum porcatum; Vulnerable EPBC Act 1999 and Threatened FFG Act 1988);
Jerry jerry (Ammannia multiflora; FFG Act 1988); and
Cane grass (Eragrostis australasica; FFG Act 1988).
Wirri-lo is currently managed for conservation purposes and is owned and managed by Wetland Revival Trust which focuses on wetland rehabilitation in partnership with TO’s.

APPROACH
Wirra-Lo was once regularly flooded from Barr Creek, the Loddon River and/or the Murray River. The hydrology of this area was fundamentally altered due to construction of artificial levees in the 1900s. Today, only major floods result in any floodplain connectivity.
EWT water via irrigation channels is required to achieve a more natural water regime.
Water delivery is to support:
Vegetation communities condition,
Habitat for waterbirds including threatened Australasian bitterns, brolgas and freckled ducks;
Habitat for frogs including the threatened southern bell frog; and
The recruitment of threatened wetland plants species.
This is an ongoing collaboration between Wetland Revival Trust, CEWH and MDWWG.

OUTCOMES
Habitat for southern bell frog and common frogs.
Habitat for a range of waterbirds including threatened Australasian bitterns, brolgas and freckled ducks.
Several threatened (in VIC) and culturally significant plants including jerry jerry, cane grass and EPBC listed stiff groundsel and ridged water-milfoil.
