Yambuna Wetland

  • PURPOSE

The primary management objectives for Yambuna Lagoon are to:

protect, maintain and enhance a diversity of wetland types such as freshwater meadow, shallow freshwater marsh and deep freshwater marsh

protect, maintain and enhance two depleted vegetation communities in Victoria such as Rushy Riverine Swamp and Riverine Swamp Forest, and threatened plant species

enhance connectivity with other wetlands adjoining the Lower Goulburn National Park, providing flow connectivity and potential fish and carbon connectivity with the Goulburn River.

  • APPROACH

The landholder of Yambuna Lagoon is passionate about agriculture and wetlands. Like many wetlands in the Murray-Darling Basin, the flooding of Yambuna Lagoon has changed due to river regulation. The landholder’s vision for Yambuna Lagoon is that the natural watering regime is restored, and that the lagoon supports healthy vegetation communities and a diversity of waterbird and frog populations.

  • OUTCOMES

Restoring the black depression to promote an aquatic understorey and support the growth of wetland vegetation

Provide refuge for waterbirds, frogs, other aquatic and terrestrial animals.

By supporting this wetland, environmental values for the surrounding area are enhanced as this wetland provides for some connectivity with Waranga Basin and the Goulburn River, and a series of conservation areas that include the Heathcote-Graytown National Park and other wetlands that also form part of the Lower Goulburn River Floodplain Wetlands of National Significance and Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority Waterways Strategy.
