Winlaton Wetland
-
PURPOSE
Winlaton wetland is located on the Loddon River Floodplain (Victoria) 5km north-east of the Loddon and Little Murray River junction. It is classified as a freshwater meadow.
The North-Central CMA identified it as an important wetland and sought a partnership to deliver water to the site.
Six species of bats have been identified at the site, and a range of aquatic plants, waterbirds and frogs including the endangered southern bell frog (Vulnerable EPBC Act 1999 and Threatened FFG Act 1988).
The landholder to the south is highly involved in management of his property for ecological outcomes and is supportive of the watering action.
-
APPROACH
Winlaton Wetland received its first EWT water in May 2022 and the event helped support newly planted endemic plants via a carbon restoration program in partnership with Wetlands Revival Trust.
Subsequent watering events and natural floodplain inundation supported the recruitment of the endangered southern bell frog .
Watering will continue to focus on supporting habitat for southern bell frog, waterbirds and wetland vegetation including lignum.
-
OUTCOMES
Support open meadow wetland community and lignum areas, and the recruitment of aquatic plants.
Provide refuge and foraging habitat for a range of water and terrestrial bird species.
Provide refuge for southern bell frog.
