Restdown Wetland

  • PURPOSE

    The primary management objectives for Restdown Wetland are to:

    Provide habitat for waterbirds and frogs;

    Maintain health of wetland vegetation

    Support the 10-year Property Vegetation Plan through Murray Local Land Services (LLS) and MDWWG (2017) focused on achieving carbon storage and biodiversity outcomes.

  • APPROACH

    The landholders of Restdown Wetland are organic farmers who care deeply about the environment and sharing their passion with the community. Visitors to Restdown can explore the wetlands through a ‘wetland walk’, a loop around the wetlands with boardwalks and education signage on local plants and wildlife, cultural artefacts, and wetland ecosystems.

    Restdown wetlands are located within a black box woodland adjacent to the Koondrook State Forest on the Murray River. The wetland today only fills in very wet years requiring additional targeted flows to achieve a more ‘natural’ watering regime. Uniquely, the wetlands comprise of a series of channels that were likely built and used for farming purposes by First Nations People.

  • OUTCOMES

    Working closely with the private landholders, the goal for Restdown Wetland is to support a natural water regime, helping to restore the black box woodland and provides suitable habitat for waterbirds and frogs.

    By supporting this wetland, environmental values for the surrounding area are enhanced as this wetland provides connectivity with the Thule Creek and Green Gully systems, and the Koondrook-Perricoota Forest.
