Haybrook Wetlands
-
PURPOSE
Haybrook farm is located at Wee Wee Rup in North Central Victoria and operates a large dairy, milking ~400 cows, with irrigated paddocks growing annual pastures and winter crops. The owners are passionate about the local environment and the ability for farms to possess environmental assets. The owners have undertaken extensive revegetation projects replacing missing native species and creating habitat corridors for wildlife. The owners are also very active in the community and advocates for sustainable farming.
With the decommissioning of channels across the Goulbourn Murray Irrigation District a lot of waterbird and aquatic fauna habitat has disappeared.
Haybrook farm is providing quality habitat for waterbirds and frogs. Two wetland sites have been receiving water for environmental watering, being Hornsby’s Dam and Haybrooks Wetland.
-
APPROACH
The hydrology of these wetlands have in large been altered by artificial levees and today only receive inflows in very wet years. These wetlands receive water through irrigation channels.
EWT water to support wetland vegetation, waterbird refuge and frogs.
Haybrook’s Wetlands supports an array of water birds and provides excellent breeding habitat thanks in part to Field and Game Australia’s nesting boxes that they installed onsite. Many waterbird species have used the wetland for refuge, feeding and breeding purposes.
-
OUTCOMES
Supports open water environments as well as chenopod and lignum shrublands.
Habitat for a range of waterbird species including brolgas that are listed as Endangered in Victoria (FFG Act 1988).
Potential habitat for the threatened southern bell frog (Vulnerable EPBC Act 1999 and Threatened FFG Act 1988).
