Thompsons Wetland

  • PURPOSE

Thompsons Wetland is a black box wetland near Tatura VIC. We are working with the landholder to support a natural water regime, helping to restore the black box woodland and provide suitable habitat for waterbirds and frogs.

  • APPROACH

The landholder has installed 100s of nest boxes for wildlife around the wetland and actively manages the wetland for environmental outcomes. With an appropriate watering regime, this wetland could see benefits to vegetation quality and cover, providing habitat for waterbird foraging and for frogs. The wetland today only fills in very wet years from runoff, requiring targeted flows to achieve a more ‘natural’ watering regime. This site provides an example for the community to see benefits of planting trees and environmental watering.

  • OUTCOMES

Restoring the black depression to promote an aquatic understorey and support the growth of wetland vegetation

Provide refuge for waterbirds, frogs, other aquatic and terrestrial animals.

By supporting this wetland, environmental values for the surrounding area are enhanced as this wetland provides for some connectivity with Waranga Basin and the Goulburn River, and a series of conservation areas that include the Heathcote-Graytown National Park.
