Frankling’s Wetland
-
PURPOSE
Frankling’s Wetland near Barham in Victoria is found on the Murray River floodplain. The family are very passionate about the local environment and the ability for the farm to support environmental assets. They have undertaken revegetation projects replacing missing native species and fenced off areas, including the wetland, to protect remnant ancient black box and river red gum trees.
-
APPROACH
Franklings Wetland was once regularly flooded. The hydrology of this area was fundamentally altered due to the construction of artificial levees. Today, only major floods result in any floodplain connectivity.
EWT water via irrigation channels is required to achieve a more natural water regime.
-
OUTCOMES
Water delivery is to support:
Black box and river red gum communities;
Wetland dependent herbaceous plants species;
Habitat for waterbirds and frogs;
Terrestrial birds including threatened bird species found on site such as the superb parrot and grey-crowned babbler (FFG Act 1988); and
Landscape connectivity with the Murray River.
