Coomealla Lagoons

  • PURPOSE

    The lagoons may potentially provide refuge habitat for translocated endangered small-bodied fish such as the olive perchlet and the purple spotted gudgeon in partnership with NSW DPI Fisheries.

    Local schools are now using this site for educational purposes and to collect water bugs! Bush walkers and bike riders are now frequenting the lagoons. These lagoons are small, however provide an opportunity to reconnect with nature in an urban setting.

  • APPROACH

    With support from the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club and Wentworth Shire Council, we are rehabilitating three small lagoons at the Coomealla Golf Course Dareton, western NSW.

    The Coomealla Golf Course Lagoons have been managed for environmental outcomes since 2020-21. Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club delivers a small annual Environmental Water Trust donation to keep the lagoons topped up all year.

    This helps manage water quality (particularly in Summer when the lagoons can smell with elevated algae levels created by hotter weather) and provides habitat for waterbirds and other wildlife. We undertake regular frog and water quality monitoring and waterbird counts in partnership with local volunteer birdwatchers, and we are developing a comprehensive species list.

  • OUTCOMES

    Five different frog species and 25 waterbird species have been identified so far and is expected to increase with regular monitoring by local volunteer bird watching groups.

    Providing off-river habitat; Increasing the availability of habitat for fauna (including frogs, waterbirds, and terrestrial birds;

    Habitat for waterbirds including potential small scale Ibis rookery

    Potential habitat for translocated endangered small-bodied fish
