O’Brien’s Wetlands
-
PURPOSE
The primary management objectives for O’Brien’s Swamp are to:
Support habitat for waterbirds and frogs including southern bell frogs and brolgas; and
Maintain health and recruitment of wetland plants.
-
APPROACH
Working with the landholder, the goal is to rehabilitate the wetland by proving a more natural drying and wetting cycle to improve vegetation quality and cover, support the growth of planted vegetation and provide habitat for waterbird foraging and for frogs. There is potential for the site to support Southern Bell Frogs which may benefit from its proximity to a channel system.
O’Brien’s Swamp is situated amongst an expansive rural community at Mincha, Pyramid Hill Victoria. The landholders and Damien Cook from Wetland Revival Trust have been planting a range of wetland plant species at O’Brien’s Swamp.
-
OUTCOMES
Today a range of uncommon species are found at the wetland including the Vulnerable ridged water-milfoil (EPBC Act) and Endangered stiff groundsel (EPBC Act), as well as other unique species such as the Endangered (FFG Act) long eryngium and swainsona-pea.
Brolgas have also returned to the site for foraging purposes.
